Friends, family, artists, and staff who supported the project joined the young people who talked about their work, and showed a video that they had produced with the Barton Ladies group about their experiences of the Bridgewater Canal.

The young people involved learnt a host of new skills, including video production, audio recording and using different social media platforms to show their work. It also built confidence, provided those that participated with an inter-generational experience and by the end of the project the young people had a better understanding of the history of the canal

Go With The Flow was a partnership project with Salford Community Leisure & Eccles Youth Club. The project was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

A big thanks to Heather & team, Kate, Chris, and Maya for making it all happen.

What does ‘Public Engagement’ really mean?

How can public engagement be more than just a bureaucratic tick box?

What does it mean to approach research in a meaningful, socially engaged and collaborative manner?

Are we critical of whom the research is engaging with, and in what way?

possibilities that engagement offers?

What kind of research world do we want to see in the future?

It will bring together Postgraduate students and Early Career Researchers working in the field of Postcolonial Studies, with professionals from a range of organizations outside of academia, including political, cultural, literary and community projects and vocations, to share ideas and models of working.

We are very much looking forward to sharing our own methods of engaging with people through digital art practice, and developing a long lasting network with postcolonial researchers and other practitioners.

Lets Go Global are always keen to link to research activity so that we can continue to develop our practice around meaninful public engagement, and keep up to date with current thinking from academic studies.

They are invited to take part in The Big Rug Art Project.

This is mixed media creative initiative led by Jo Egerton, a local resident and founder of Birds of Paradise Arts, and will celebrate the uniqueness of individuals.

Participants will use paper; a familiar and accessible material, to weave an A4 sized section of the Big Rug. Using inspiration from their own lives, the rug will capture people’s interests, aspirations, hobbies, friends, family and everything that makes them who they are.

Our wonderful Dream Machine!

Along with celebrating the uniqueness of Sale West residents of all ages, The Big Rug will capture imaginations further, not only through the woven pieces of paper, but by catching dreams in a Dream Machine, designed by a local child.

The Dream Machine will digitally record resident’s dreams and wishes; rekindling forgotten dreams and inspiring new ones, dreams that have come true and dreams that will inspire others. Whether modest or ambitious, from wanting flowers to plant in their garden to going to Paris on an aeroplane, anything is possible!

How to take part

Residents can make and submit their rug independently by accessing information online, by attending a weekly club in the local community or by coming along to one of our Big Rug workshops. These include the Big Rug drop in sessions Mondays term time 2.30pm – 4.45pm at the Sunshine Cafe, Sale West and the family fun session’s at the Sale West Community Centre the first is 29th May 1.00pm – 3.00pm. More fun day dates to follow in the summer.

Lets Go Global are working in partnership with Salford Community Leisure on a social media project with young people from Eccles Youth Centre. The project ‘Go with the flow’ is an experimental pilot programme looking at how the many social media platforms can be used to engage with young people, and the wider community. The project is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The young people involved are working with artist Maya Chowdhry to explore the history of the Bridgewater Canal. The group have set up various social media sites to tell their stories about how the canal came about, and what is on offer for young people today.

Over the half term holiday the group had the opportunity to go on a canal boat trip, which they filmed, and took some audio recordings of their experiences. They also learnt more about how The Bridgewater Canal has changed throughout its long history, first as a commercial waterway and now as a leisure waterway.

The group are trying to get more people to interact with them so please like their Facebook page, and view the other sites to keep up to date with their progress and stories. So please spread the word!

Thank you.

Brinnington is bursting with creative energy this Easter! as it takes part in Lets Go Global’s See it! Say it! Do it! Project.

March 25th – 30th sees the first ever Brinnington Arts Festival, bringing together artists, groups and residents in a celebration of all that is great about their community. The Festival builds on the huge success of so many fantastic lantern parades as well as smaller projects, such as the Brinnington Open Art Exhibition last year.

Events will take place in many venues including First House, Brinnington Community Centre, the ‘Tin Hut’ Crescent Road Centre and Brinnington Park.

Lucy Eyles from the Brushstrokes Art Group which is for stroke survivors and meets at the Crescent Road Centre, says “We hope the festival will raise awareness of the arts and give people insight into what’s happening locally - create a more positive image of the area. “

James Alcock from the Midweek Group agrees. “We hope the festival will create a vibrant art & craft community – raising the status of the area and combating stereotypical views.”

Many local services are also happy to be involved. Rebecca Horton from Stockport Homes works with the Brinnington Residents and Tenants Association. She says, “We hope to promote the work of our group locally and encourage new members to join.We want to raise awareness of all the positive activities that are available and recognise skills and achievements. We hope the festival will let people know about all the great things we have done and the opportunities available”

The Mayor of Stockport, Councilor Wendy Meikle, will officially open the Festival on Monday 25th March at 10 at the entrance to Brinnington Park – heralding a packed day of fun and activity including drumming and lantern-making workshops and easter bonnet-making workshops, all free and open to all! Eight local groups are exhibiting across Brinnington during the week, including Spectrum Art Group, Brush Strokes, Artistic Moves, the Midweek Group and Pure Studios.

There are workshops during the week, alongside a pop up Gallery at the Market in the Piazza and an egg hunt in the park. NK Theatre will be performing a specially created theatre performance, ‘Just a Few Quid’, with local young people at 7pm on Thursday 27th at St Lukes Parish Centre. And Rising Stars are celebrating everything music from singers, rappers, producers, DJ’s to poets with ‘Art- ppreciation’ at Brinnington Youth Centre during the afternoon of Friday 29th.

The Festival culminates in a stunning lantern parade through Brinnington at 6.30 on Saturday 30th March.

Anthony Ward is organising the drumming workshops and is involved in the lantern parade. He says, “We hope the festival will encourage people to join new groups, enjoy art activities and learn new skills. We want to show that there are talented people in our community and show we have a lot to offer – we have lots of spirit and enthusiasm.”

All the events are free and everyone is welcome. So come along to the Brinnington Arts Festival this Easter and give yourself a creative treat!

There are brochures with details of each event all around Brinnington and Stockport, and you can pick up a map of venues from First House in Brinnington during the Festival week itself.

Part of the See it! Say it! Do it! project, the Festival is being organised by Arc, who have been leading a range of creative activities including projects at the Children’s Centre, Westmoreland School and First House over the past year and a half. It is supported and funded by the National Lottery, SMBC, ACE, AGMA and Let’s Go Global.
